What is a QR code and how it works
The abbreviation stands for Quick Response and literally means “quick response”. This method of data encryption is based on a two-dimensional system. Each code contains a certain number of black squares in a unique arrangement. With QR you can encrypt any information in digital, text format, as well as hieroglyphs.
Maximum amount of data:
- numbers – up to 7000 characters;
- Latin and Cyrillic characters – up to 4296;
- hieroglyphs – until 1817;
- Any information in bytes – up to 2953.
Each QR code contains several structural elements:
- modular code;
- search and alignment patterns (3 squares, which are necessary for positioning the scanner);
- mask codes, correction levels and versions;
- frame around the image.
A module in the context of a QR code is called one black or white square.

The history of the barcode and QR-code

After several months of work, young scientists created a version of a linear barcode, which was based on elements of Morse code and the technology of recording sound to movies. Alternating narrow and long black stripes on a white background appeared as a result of the fact that the scientists pulled down dots and dashes.
A few years later, a laser was invented that simplified the barcode reading technology. It became possible to scan the code from different distances, and the device became more compact.
The first demonstration of a workable bar code application and readout system took place in 1971. RCA used a circular bar code that was impractical at that time — when printed, the circles became deformed and scanning became impossible.
At the same time, the well-known company IBM, in which Woolland worked in the 50s, asked the scientist to go to work, where he and his partner George Laurel developed a bar code, which is now familiar to everyone. This development was called UPC – Universal Product Code.
The birthday of a modern bar code is April 3, 1973. And on June 26, 1974, a package of 10 gum was purchased. This check is on display at the Museum of American History at Smithsonian University.
The appearance of a QR code in Japan in 1994 marked the beginning of a new era in the development of logistics. The Japanese company Denso-Wave solved a problem with a lack of information that could be encrypted in a bar code, creating a two-dimensional code in which data was placed. This achievement was used by Toyota, which facilitated the production process. Denso-Wave, although it is the copyright holder of the QR-code technology, did not limit access to this development, but on the contrary, contributed to its spread.
